First black woman Vice-President.

First Indian-American Vice-President.

First daughter of immigrants to be elected Vice-President.

And what a fantastic speech she gave! Calm, confident, capable, tough, conscious of her roots, a special call-out to black women, a touching mention of her mother, with an overall cheerful, optimistic, happy-warrior attitude … that speech exemplified everything that Kamala Harris is and stands for.

Joe gave a perfectly adequate speech too, and honestly, a straightforward classic speech was quite sufficient at that moment. But Kamala knocked it out of the park. It says a lot about Joe that he picked her as veep: he’s not scared of tough capable women.

There’s a long hard road ahead with, quite likely, many disappointments along the way, but for a few days at least, we can bask in the moment.

(and yes, this is a book blog, but a post about fiction just seems trivial at this moment. It’s a physical relief that there is a light at the end of the grim tunnel of the last four years. Back to books next week).
